Maple Ridge’s waterfront dining experience, table reserved

Kingfishers sits on the banks of the Fraser River in Albion, with a waterfront view from any seat in the house.

I have eaten in a lot of rooms where the window seat only works for three tables. This is not one of them. The room was built so the water is in front of you no matter where the host puts you. High vaulted ceilings, a floor to ceiling view, comfortable booths and a banquette for when the storm watching season arrives.

Look across the water and you will find the historic Fort Langley ferry site, now a working fishing harbour, with Mount Baker behind it on a clear day. Guests regularly spot great blue herons on the boom pilings, a sturgeon breaking the surface, or a seal working the river.

BC Proud

Our philosophy is plain: fresh, local ingredients prepared in house with care. That covers the handcrafted sauces, the freshly baked breads and herbs cut from our own garden. The menu moves with the season and follows what our local suppliers, farms and waters are actually sending us.

Kingfishers grew from a small family owned fish and chip stand started in 1996 into the 200 seat riverside room that opened in 2008, continuing family business interests in Albion going back to 1958. Independently owned and operated, and glad to be part of this community.

Brunch, lunch & dinner on the water

Different reasons to book, same view. Here is what each part of the week looks like.

Sat & Sun, 11am to 2:30pm

Weekend brunch

Start the day with the river in front of you. There is a Young Guests brunch menu for children 12 and under, and plenty of family friendly seating on the restaurant side.

From noon, Tuesday to Friday

Lunch by the river

A quieter room and an easy midday table. Good for a working lunch that does not feel like one, or an hour beside the water without making an afternoon of it.

Evenings, Tuesday to Sunday

Dinner and sunset

The light on the water at the end of the day is why regulars book the early evening seating. West Coast cooking, room to talk, and a table you do not get rushed out of.

Year round

Two seasonal patios

Floor to ceiling sliding glass panels open the patio to the breeze in summer, then close and heat it when the weather turns. The courtyard patio runs along the bank under a retractable awning.

The menu moves with the season

Here is the honest version. What we serve shifts through the year because our suppliers do, so printing a dish list here would only tell you what we cooked last spring. What holds steady is how the kitchen works.

  • From the waterFresh selections change with what is landing. Ask your server for the day’s sheet. Fish and chips is on it most of the time.
  • From the grillSteaks carved on the board for the table, with hand cut onion rings and a trio of sauces made here.
  • Boards to shareCured meats, cheeses, olives and cornichons, with breads baked in our kitchen that morning.
  • Weekend brunchFree range eggs, Gelderman Farms bacon, and our Benedicts built on a flaky house scone. There is a Young Guests menu for children 12 and under.
  • Greens and handheldsSalads and sandwiches on focaccia we bake, for a lunch that does not slow the afternoon down.
  • Something sweetA short dessert list that rotates through the year. There is usually tiramisu.

Herbs come from our own garden. Sauces, dressings and breads are made in house. That part does not change with the calendar.

Questions we get asked

Do I need a reservation, or can I walk in?
Walk-ins are welcome and we seat them whenever we can. Weekend brunch and Friday and Saturday evenings fill up, so a reservation is the safer plan if you are making the drive out to Albion.
Can I bring my kids?
Yes. All ages are welcome at our standard tables, and there is a Young Guests brunch menu for children 12 and under. Choose a standard table when you book, and make a note of any young guests in your party so we can set the table properly.
Is the patio open in winter?
It is. The patio is enclosed by floor to ceiling sliding glass panels that we close and heat once the weather turns, so the view carries through the whole year. In summer the panels slide open. Storm watching season is quietly one of the better times to sit out there.
Where do I park?
There is free parking on site at 23840 River Road. The restaurant sits below River Road on the riverbank, so watch for the sign on your way down. Guests regularly note that parking is not the problem here.
Can you take a group larger than six?
Yes, and we would rather arrange it directly than have you squeeze it through an online form. Email reservations.kingfishers@gmail.com with your date, head count and occasion, and one of our management team will help place the table.
Do you have gluten free options?
We do, and our kitchen prepares food in house, which gives us more room to adjust a plate. Add the request to your reservation notes or call ahead so the kitchen can plan for it.
Is the restaurant wheelchair accessible?
Yes. If you would like us to hold a table with easier access, add a note to your reservation or call 604.463.0094 and we will arrange it.
How long does it take to get here?
Kingfishers is roughly a 30 to 40 minute drive from most of the Lower Mainland, and only a few minutes from central Maple Ridge or Pitt Meadows. The address is 23840 River Road, Maple Ridge, BC V2W 1B7.
